How Effective is the iPad as a Business Tool?

Right from the start the iPad was marketed as one of the best unique devices to be launched on the market. It’s screen size and ability to render amazing images as well as it’s great video playback lives up to this claim. However, there is more to the iPad than just this because the device offers business-savvy users some very interesting apps they can really benefit from. Although Apple is pretty independent, it does however, have in-built support for Microsoft [...]

White House Pushes Green Button To Liberate Your Energy Data

Green Button-1The future of easy home energy monitoring may be a little bit closer, thanks to a government initiative designed to allow consumers direct access to their energy consumption data. The White House's new Green Button gives utilities a way to simplify and standardize sharing usage statistics with their customers via a one-click download. Two California providers, Pacific Gas & Electric and San Diego Gas & Electric, already launched the feature, adding what is literally a green button to their websites. Utility companies in other regions are expected to implement it within the next year. Customers can click the button to download their personal usage information in one place.

BabyPing Is A Wireless Baby Monitor You Control With Your iPhone

Screen Shot 2012-05-29 at 10.04.32 AMIf you've been in the baby monitor racket as long as I have, you've seen it all: the good, the bad, and the unusable. Well here's a monitor that just might win my heart. It's called the BabyPing (there's an N in there) and it allows you to view your child's every squiggle and giggle on your iPhone or iPad. The app and monitor costs about $230 and is currently available in Europe only, although it's expected to hit our shores shortly.

Microsoft trumpets Windows Phone 7 numbers on first birthday

windows phone 7
Happy first birthday, Windows Phone 7! One year on, and the fledgling mobile operating system has 36,000 active developers in its AppHub community, 1.5 million downloads of its Developer Tools, and 11,500 apps in its Marketplace.

Microsoft is quick to take a couple shots at competitors' app stores, beating its chest about not re-counting tanslations of an app or "lite" apps, "increasing tonnage" by supporting apps from other mobile platforms, and not listing wallpapers as a category.

That's all fine and dandy, but we spend a lot of time sifting through WP7 app feeds -- and we're still not seeing a lot of awesome apps on the platform. We think a few marquee apps would've made a pretty nice first birthday present -- along with a much smoother update process for WP7 users.

Consumer Reports Names New iPad Top Tablet, Says Heat Isn’t “Cause For Concern”

new-ipadConsumer Reports, clearly moving on from whoring pageviews over heatgate, just planted the new iPad at the top of its recommended tablet chart. Citing the great screen, 5MP camera, and fast, dependable 4G Verizon data connectivity, the iPad is the best of the bunch, says Consumer Reports. But what about the new iPad's excessive heat? Clearly people still need to, as a Consumer Reports' spokesman said, "exercise caution", right? Nope.

Mozilla Messaging reintegrates with Labs, unifies focus on Web-based communication

Mozilla Messaging, citing Mozilla's increased focus on Web-borne communications, will be reintegrating with Mozilla Labs.

The Messaging subsidiary was formed in 2008 to focus on Thunderbird, but given Mozilla Labs' current focus on identity and contact management, it now makes sense for the groups to be merged. Thunderbird will be unaffected by the change -- some URLs might change, but that's it -- and presumably Messaging's F1 and Raindrop will thrive in the Labs playground.

What this means for the end user -- for the hundreds of millions of Firefox users -- is that the next big additions will be communication- and messaging-oriented. Contacts and F1 will be almost certainly be baked into Firefox 5 or 6, both of which will be released this year -- and, who knows, there might be something else even more exciting up Mozilla Labs' sleeve!

HTC Evo 4G LTE Review: Head-To-Head With The iPhone 4S And The Galaxy Nexus

htc-evo-leadThe Evo 4G LTE is one of the best phones to land on Sprint shelves in a while, but that's not to say it has no competition over at the Yellow carrier. The Galaxy Nexus has propped itself up as the Android phone to beat, while the iPhone 4S is available at the same price: $199. So what will it take to pass up the iPhone and the GalNex for the latest iteration of the Evo line? We've put together this head-to-head chart to answer just such a question.

Fly Or Die: The New iPad

Screen shot 2012-03-21 at 2.08.02 PMiPad, iPad, iPad. What else is there to say? You already know the Retina display is amazing. You know the camera's been improved and that that little A5X chip is super snappy. You know that the latest version of iOS supports Japanese Siri and voice transcription. You know three million iPads were sold in the first three days they were available, and that Apple is expected to sell 66 million before the end of 2012. What you don't know, however, is what John and I think of the new iPad.

Elephant Quest is an addictive, deep platformer

elephantquest
When someone tells me about a "platformer", my first thought is that it's probably a simple game that mainly revolves around running and jumping around, with a minimal plot. [Play a Zelda game! -Ed]

Elephant Quest is one platformer that managed to prove me completely wrong. Yes, you do run and jump around, and you also shoot at stuff. But the game has much, much more going for it.

Basically, as you run, jump and shoot, you gain experience points and level up. Hitting Space brings you into an interface where you can convert your experience points into Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Dexterity points. Once you've "specialized" your points, you then get to pick what exact skills you'd like to enhance in each field. For example, you could use your dexterity to enhance your weapons or increase your swiftness.

The game is played in a huge maze; you go through rooms using doors, and there's a large map. As the name implies, there are quests you can take, too. For example, one quest had me searching all over the place for ten balloons.

The bottom line is that this is a surprisingly deep game that just might ensnare you for a good bit longer than you intended to play. Beware!

Oracle's Patent 'Disaster': Beginning of a Bright New Era?

It's been an eventful year already here in the Linux blogosphere, but it seems fair to say few events have drawn as much attention as the Oracle v. Google trial. Bloggers have been discussing it for weeks already, of course, but developments last week brought forth nothing less than dancing in the streets of the Linux blogosphere.

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It's still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple's mobile platform. And it's even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple's tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you're searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as "touch and decide," Bing Voice Search is also built in -- making it easy to start a query without using the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

US Cybercounterterrorism Team Takes on al-Qaida

The interagency Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications last week revealed that its Digital Outreach Team responded to pictures posted by al-Qaida supporters on Yemeni discussion forums. To counter the images of coffins covered by the U.S. flag, the center posted pictures of coffins draped with the Yemen flag, along with Arabic messages regarding the human toll inflicted on Yemen by al-Qaida.

How to get the HTC Flashlight on the EVO 4G LTE [From the forums]

HTC EVO 4G LTE

The Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE is nearly devoid of bloatware. It's got the Sprint Zone and HTC Hub apps, but it's missing all of the usual carrier-loaded crap we're used to finding littered in our app drawers. It's also missing a few staples, though, including the Flashlight application. Getting it back is pretty simple, as SuicydeStealth points out in our forums. Just fire up the HTC Hub app, go to HTC Essentials in the categories, and there you'll find the flashlight app. And while you're there, might as well poke around and see if anything else is missing.

Interesting is that this isn't even an option on the AT&T HTC One X. Flashlight just doesn't show up.

Google demands veto on OEM Android changes, stretches definition of 'open source'

Google, according to reports from "a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem" is finally locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the 'final' code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That's all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign 'non-fragmentation clauses.' This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they're unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android -- which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors -- and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft's Bing instead of Google search.

GreenCharge App Reveals Cost and Carbon Savings To Electric Car Drivers

GreenCharge LogoElectric car drivers deserve to see their positive impact on the environment and their wallets, but the official mobile apps for the Nissan LEAF and Chevy Volt only display remaining battery. GreenCharge is a new iOS app released today that displays your car's remaining charge, but also its current range, the local energy price, a log of its usage, and your cost and carbon reduction versus driving a gasoline vehicle. Finally, an app that shows how you're saving both kinds of green.

Viewsonic set to laugh at tablet sizes by introducing 22-inch behemoth?

Android Central

Yes, you did read that right. 22-inches. Putting Toshiba's 13-inch effort in the shade, Viewsonic could be about to go where no Android OEM has gone before by introducing a tablet the size of a PC monitor.

Touted as a "smart business tablet monitor," the colossal Ice Cream Sandwich device could be set for it's first public viewing at the forthcoming Computex show in Taipei.

What the average consumer could do with something like this remains to be seen. If it does exist though, it's an interesting concept and exciting to see companies thinking outside the box. Probably wouldn't want to take this on the bus to work though.

No word on prospective specs or pricing for whatever this turns out to be, but at 22-inches, it's not likely to be cheap. Computex is only a few days away though, so we'll know soon enough.

Windows 8 welcome screen revealed, looks very Metro

windows 8 welcome screen
It's not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7's Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven't seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.

Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we've now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we're wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you'll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.

Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen -- as you can on current Android devices.

Foxconn To Invest $1.6B In Sharp For Flat Panels, Maybe For The iPad? Maybe For Apple TV?

foxconnstoresApple has yet to make any statements about where and when we might ever see an Apple TV product to match the impact it has had in the smartphone and tablet markets. But news of an investment by its key manufacturing partner, Foxconn, could point to the confidence others have of what might be coming soon. Foxconn is investing a combined 133 billion yen ($1.6 billion) in TV maker Sharp Corporation and a flat-panel JV it has with Sony -- and it has added a commitment to buy up to 50 percent of all of Sharp's LCD panel output. The deal is the largest-ever by a Taiwanese manufacturer in a Japanese supplier and could be all the more bold, considering that just yesterday there was a report from iSuppli on how sales of flat-panel TVs were in decline and flattening out.

You can now rent Adobe Photoshop for $35 per month, CS 5.5 available soon

Rejoice! No longer will you have to fork over $700 for a Photoshop CS5 license! Adobe has unveiled a new subscription scheme where you can rent the entire Creative Suite, or individual packages, by the month, or for an entire year.

Adobe Photoshop can be yours for $35 per month if you agree to rent it for 12 months, or $49 per month if you require its services for a shorter period. Dreamweaver can be had for even cheaper, at just $19 per month. The entire Master Collection is still rather expensive, though, at $125 per month.

Today, Adobe also ushered in the release of Creative Suite 5.5, and simultaneously upped its release cycle from 18 months to 24 months. This means, if you rent Photoshop for two years, it's actually the same cost as buying it outright. There's no rent-to-own option, though -- so you wouldn't have access to the cheaper upgrade price once Creative Suite 6 rolls around next year. Still, if you need access to Photoshop, After Effects or Premiere for a one-time project, the new rental scheme could be exactly what you're looking for.

In other news, Adobe has announced that it will be launching three rather exciting iPad apps that work in conjunction with Photoshop: Eazel, Nav, and Color Lava. Eazel lets you five-finger paint on your iPad, and export the result into Photoshop; Nav acts as some kind of workspace, brush and menu extension, and the hopefully named Color Lava is a paint mixing palette. The apps are expected to appear in the App Store in the next 30 days.

Twitter Buys Personalized Email Marketer RestEngine To Deliver Best Tweet Digests

RestEngine TwitterTwitter has just finalized a deal to hire the team and buy the technology of RestEngine, a personalized email marketing service, which could help Twitter deliver email digests of great tweets you've missed. The deal fits well with Twitter's recent talent acquisition of Summify, which creates these kinds of personal news digests. RestEngine had been powering re-engagement emails for social game companies like Crowdstarthat enticed users to start playing again by telling them what their in-game friends had been achieving. Three of four founders will be joining the flock, and the company's technology will come along with them. RestEngine's founder Joe Waltman called this is an acquisition since Twitter's gaining both employees and tech, though Twitter views it as an acqui-hire. Co-founder Joe Waltman won't be moving to Twitter as he tells me his entrepreneurial spirit is too strong and he'll be working on new projects after a vacation. It looks like Twitter's got a plan to get more of its inactive users tweeting again...
